Project and Materials Assessment
Good Binding
This image shows a bound volume with ample gutter space.
Tight Binding
This image shows a volume bound too tightly to adequately capture text
that appears close to the page gutter. This text would be lost or poorly
captured in the reformatting process.
OCR Capture Software
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is the translation of optically scanned written text characters into
digital character codes. OCR software processes scanned images to identify
text and determine what letters are represented. OCR sofware presents an efficient and cost-effective
method of converting hard-copy materials into data files. Non-standard fonts, artistic fonts, and
handwritten scripts, such as the one presented here, are often incorrectly identified by OCR software due to their unusual presentation.
Poor Character Quality
The text in this volume is of poor quality to adequately capture and
OCR. Blurred or broken text, such as this, does not reproduce well and,
likewise, the OCR program will return a higher percentage of errors when
attempting to read the page.
Fragile Materials
Items that are fragile often take longer to digitize, as it is necessary to spend extra time preparing for and handling them during the reformatting process.
