Project Development – Presentation
The Library Technology Group (LTG) (along with the DoIT) develops the architecture underpinning the indexing,
delivery, and discovery of UWDC resources, including the indexing and search functions, and their interfaces.
The UWDCC works with LTG to create individualized web interfaces for resources and resource collections.
The resources created by the UWDCC are generally presented using one of these default models:
- Electronic Facsimile Text (Pageturner/EFacs)
The electronic facsimile (or pageturner) model is used for materials with sequentially structured contents (for example, a book or journal volume) where the structure must be reflected in the online environment in order to provide a natural interface for use. The resource is presented as a series of items (such as chapters or articles) and may also be viewed as a sequence of pages. This model delivers resources that can be viewed as images of the original pages, as well as searchable OCR text.
- Multimedia/Bibliographic Databases (Sitesearch)
The bibliographic/multimedia model uses the Dublin Core metadata standard (ANSI/NISO Z39.85) to capture bibliographic and descriptive information about objects including text, images, audio, or video. Examples of resources created using this model include bibliographies or collections of scanned photographs and sound files.
- Encoded E-Text (TEI/EAD)
The UWDCC also produces digital works according to Encoded Archival Description (EAD) and Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) markup standards. Both of these are similar to HTML, but give much greater access to a document's intellectual content. These latter encoding models are excellent ways to support discovery of humanities-based texts.
